That forty-five-degree angle gash in the rock face is what is left of a hole drilled to accommodate explosives when the roadway that is now Forbidden Drive was being blasted out, probably in the 1850s. You can find it, as well as a couple of others, in the massive outcropping of rocks on Forbidden Drive half way between Lincoln Drive and the Blue Stone Bridge.

Was the road named for my cousin, or some other reason? I never have seen the drill holes this small on rock blasting but guess the drills came in all sizes. It is hard to tell how large it is as it would have to be big enough for a stick of dynamite or several sticks in a row. Interesting post.

Yes, according to the book Mermaids, Monasteries, Cherokees and Custer -- the Stories Behind Philadelphia Street Names, by Robert Alotta, Lincoln Drive was named for Abraham Lincoln.
