Tough nut to crack


I don't know what this fallen nut is. Not shellbark, not walnut, I'm pretty sure. Probably not edible. But boy, what a fragrance! Very spicy, a mixture of lime and evergreen. That doesn't begin to do it justice.

    I would have guessed walnut. And I guess I would be wrong. You could whack it with a hammer and see if that walnut shell is inside.

    I would have guessed the same as Abraham. It looks like a walnut to me, although an oddly shaped walnut!

    Black Walnut. It has the same distinct aroma as you described.
